Jamia Millia Islamia to take decision regarding CUET in January

The decision on whether Jamia Millia Islamia will implement the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to all undergraduate courses in the upcoming academic session is expected to be made in January, according to a senior official on Thursday.

A committee has been constituted by the university to evaluate the feasibility of adopting CUET, introduced earlier this year, for all its courses. Currently, the university has utilized CUET for admissions to 10 courses. The Registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia, Nazim Husain Al-Jafri, stated that the committee is actively examining the matter and is anticipated to present a report soon.

The committee’s findings will be presented during an Academic Council meeting scheduled for January. Subsequently, the Executive Council, the highest decision-making body of the university, will deliberate on the matter. Jafri added that the Academic Council will address the issue during its January meeting, followed by discussions at the Executive Council.

In the current academic year, CUET was employed for admissions to only 10 undergraduate courses at Jamia Millia Islamia University. The registration portal for these courses was open to candidates seeking admission in August. The specified courses included BA (Hons) Turkish Language and Literature, BA (Hons) Sanskrit, BA (Hons) French and Francophone Studies, BA (Hons) Spanish and Latin American Studies, BA (Hons) History, BA (Hons) Hindi, BA (Hons) Economics, BSc Biotechnology, BVoc (Solar Energy), and BSc (Hons) Physics.

Several major central universities in the national capital had either partially or entirely adopted CUET for admissions to undergraduate courses in the academic session 2022-23. The University Grants Commission (UGC) mandated in March that all central universities must admit students through CUET. The first edition of the exam witnessed over 14 lakh candidates participating.
